My maternal grandfather was born in southeastern Pennsylvania in 1903 and told me when I was a boy that in the 1920s, times were so good that saloon owners would offer a free lunch, consisting of bread and butter, cheese, cold cuts, pickles and the like. “Sure, they were hoping you’d buy a glass of beer for a nickel, but they really didn’t mind if you didn’t and simply scarfed down a free sandwich.”
He went on to tell me that nowadays, there’s a popular slogan: There’s no such thing as a free lunch, “but believe me, there was at the time.”
From today’s perspective of greed and selfishness, this whole story sounds like a fairy tale. Corporations and the congresspeople they own want one thing: to suck the life out of us.
As shown here, we live in a society that glorifies the very worst traits of the human animal and seems to be on a rocket ride to its own destruction.
Ignorance has terrific value to the billionaire class. If you’re filthy rich, you really don’t want a nation full of people learning that pure market capitalism is, by its very nature, exploitative, or that the consumption of fossil fuels is destroying our planet’s capacity to support life.
The Trump administration and congressional Republicans are exceptionally good at focusing the MAGA base on problems that don’t exist.
What bathrooms should trans people use? Well, before we work ourselves into a frenzy, let’s ask ourselves if this is an issue that is really harming the good people of this nation.
Keep in mind that 60% of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck and are struggling to afford groceries.
