Re: The meme here, to use a term from economics, I would say that the “marginal utility” of a living wage is quite high, but it trails off after that. It’s kind of like your first sandwich when you’re hungry or your first coat when you’re cold.
FWIW, I believe that societies that are organized around the principle of a living wage, i.e., what one finds in the rest of the developed world, are better in every way than what we have here in the U.S.
Their people are happier, healthier, more productive, better educated, less violent, kinder, and less prone to substance abuse. Moreover, they don’t vote for criminal sociopaths to lead their country; that’s a special bonus.
If you ask people from Sweden, for instance, if they resent paying higher taxes than what we Americans pay, most of them will laugh at you. I do this routinely, and I’ve never heard anyone say, “Oh, no, poverty, ignorance, and mass shootings are our national objectives.”
I just met a woman who’s been a flight attendant for Delta Airlines since the early 1990s, who laments that her company has been ruined by corporate greed, which has trashed so many other things in our lives.
As it turns out, the CEO makes more than $20 million per year, largely based on bonuses associated with cutting costs. “Now we have tray tables that don’t work and seatbacks that don’t recline, and nobody even thinks about fixing them.”
She went on, “This shift has been particularly obvious in the case of Delta, which, when I started with them, was known for its southern charm and the feeling of welcoming its passengers. Now, that gone. It’s like it never existed.”
Trump should fire Pete Hegseth?
Oh sure. If you’re Trump, Hegseth is the perfect leader of the Pentagon. He’s lawless, stupid, cruel, misogynistic, and racist. No one could possibly match Trump’s values with any greater precision.
We won’t know how much damage Trump has done to our county, its people, the world in general, until Trump leaves office.
That’s just one more good reason to make this happen soon.
