Perhaps “idiots” is the wrong word. The actual driver behind our electing the people shown at left is that many of us are desperate to be told that what we believe is true, even though if it’s plainly incorrect.
Take the assertion that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. Even Fox News went on camera and told its viewers that this was categorically false, that there was no evidence to support the claim, that they made it up, and they apologize for doing so.
Is that good enough for the people who vote for people who vote for Marjorie Taylor Greene? Of course not. If you want to win a House seat from that part of rural Georgia, and you’re not willing to say the election was stolen, then you’re going to lose. It’s that simple.
They are both the results of the human need to make sense of the world around us and to unravel life’s great mysteries.
The idea of a calm presentation of the news may have a certain surface-level appeal, and, at most points in history, that may have been completely appropriate.
But what about 1933 when Hitler was coming to power in Germany?
What about 2026 while Trump is destroying American democracy?
If you’re an American and you’re not infuriated, there is something profoundly defective in you.
When I first saw this, I thought it was a joke, but then I realized that means this sincerely.
The president’s approval rating is in the low 30s, as most Americans are disenchanted, to put it kindly, with his corruption, dishonesty, and incompetence.
If I were a Republican running for election, the very last thing I would be promoting to voters is any association whatsoever with Trump.
