Canada is a big country with a wide range of weather conditions which can have huge impact on our lives. Canadians, the economy and public safety, all rely on accurate weather forecasts.
So how does Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast the weather?
In order to predict tomorrow’s weather or next week’s, we need to know what’s happening, right now.
Special equipment monitors and collects information on current weather conditions; such as temperature, pressure, rain fall and wind speed, across the country, and the world.
All this information is collected and combined in order to best estimate what’s currently happening in our atmosphere.
These atmospheric conditions are fed into powerful supercomputers, which use the laws of physics, to model and predict how these conditions will change over time.
The supercomputers’ predictions are further analysed and improved by a team of meteorologists. These weather experts work around the clock to provide forecasts for the general public, aircraft, ships and businesses. And they provide warnings and alerts if bad or dangerous weather is expected.
Our scientists work year-round to continuously improve weather forecasting.
Thanks to their advances, we are moving towards Earth Modelling Systems, where we look at more than just the atmosphere. More and more we are including other parts of the earth’s ecosystem such as the oceans, ice, lakes and rivers.

For many of us in the West, aviation is a huge chunk of our climate impact, and most of the impact of any given flight doesn’t even come from its carbon emissions. Fortunately, new analysis and field tests indicate that this impact can be mitigated quickly, cheaply, and safely.
If you wanted a message to send to your airline, perhaps something like the following?
“Hello [AIRLINE], I am one of your customers. Do you incorporate contrail avoidance into your flight routing or are you planning to take part in one of the many trials in contrail avoidance? Here’s a website explaining how easy and effective it is: contrails.org”.
