The website A Word a Day features “A Thought for Today,” normally from a notable author born on this date.

Here’s one from writer Ann Patchett (pictured), born 2 Dec 1963: The question is whether or not you choose to disturb the world around you, or if you choose to let it go on as if you had never arrived.

Patchett uses the word “disturb” in the sense of interfering with the normal arrangement or functioning of something. And Lord knows there are plenty of things in the world around us that need to be disturbed.

To take the two most obvious examples:

If left to proceed in a business-as-usual manner, we’ll soon live on a planet that is greatly compromised in its ability to support life, and

We Americans will live in an authoritarian state.

The Nazi Playbook

Always blame your opposition for the crimes you committed.

We baby boomers remember when the two dominant political parties were essentially indistinguishable.  Eisenhower, a Republican, stood for strong Social Security, limited military, unemployment insurance, and a strong minimum wage.

What does today’s GOP champion?  Cutting off all assistance for the poor, tax cuts of billionaires, slashing into Social Security (the money you and I earned) and starting a senseless and illegal war.

Who are the radicals here?

What It Means to be a Leftist

I just came across Sofo Archon, an incredibly interesting speaker and writer.

My only response to what he says at left is that you are, in fact, a leftist, whether you accept that or not.  Anyone who says that he belongs to “Humanity and Earth” is a leftist by definition, just like anyone who wears the t-shirt below.

This is kind of like saying, “I am neither a Christian nor an atheist, but I believe in God and I accept His son Jesus Christ as my savior.”  Sorry, that makes you a Christian.

Trump’s Obsession with Obama

The meme here raises an important point:  Why are 30% of American voters still supporting a man who spends a great deal of time making ridiculous claims about an ex-president who left office 10 years ago? Doesn’t he have duties that pertain to making this a better country, one that offers its citizens a higher quality of life?
