Easily transition-able from brunch to the office to happy hour, a good pair of sustainable flats can be the ultimate versatile footwear in your closet.

Finding a good pair of well-crafted and responsibly-made flats, though, is certainly not as easy as hopping over to the discount shoe store down the street. But that’s why I’ve curated this short and sweet guide to seven brands with well-made, earth-friendly, and ethical flats — including pointy toe, square toe, and Mary Janes — to help you on your hunt for that perfect pair you’ll wear well for years to come.

Note that this guide includes affiliate links. As always, brands featured in shopping guides are brands I love and which meet high standards for sustainability!

1. ALOHAS

Spanish brand Alohas flips the typical fashion system on its head with its “on-demand production” process.

Instead of overproducing tons of shoes to later discount them, ALOHAs newest styles are made available for pre-order at a discount so the footwear brand can more accurately forecast demand. Then the shoes — like their flats — are made locally in Spain and Portugal and new items are 30% off.

Conscious Qualities: On-Demand Production, Locally Made,

Price Range: €126 – €250

2. Rothy’s

Sick of sacrificing comfort to wear beautiful shoes? Rothy’s is the brand you’ve been waiting for. Committed to incredible comfort, Rothy’s signature sustainable material is designed to be instantaneously wearable (i.e. no break-in required)—say bye, bye to those dreaded first-wear blisters.

In my experience, Rothy’s are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn.

Materials: Recycled Materials, TRUE Platinum certified for zero waste production

Price: $129

3. Allbirds

Another eco shoe brand dedicated to comfort, Allbirds’ creates lightweight, super smooth and breathable flats from tree fibers, aptly called “Tree Breezers”. The (washable) shoes are also soft enough to wear without socks.

The Allbirds Tree Breezers are far more comfortable than typical flats, though I find that the Rothy’s rank slightly higher in the comfort category.

Conscious Qualities: Natural materials (FSC-Certified eucalyptus, castor mean oil, sugarcane EVA)

Price: $100

4. Darzah @ Made Trade

Fair trade certified by Fair Trade Federation, Darzah’s ethical flats are entirely hand-embroidered and handcrafted in Palestine from locally sourced leather. The tatreez flats are embroidered by refugee and low-income women artisans with this traditional Palestinian technique.

Conscious Qualities: Sustains Heritage Crafts, Fair Trade Certified

Price: $189 – $209

5. Nisolo

If you’re seeking a quality pair of classic, fair trade flats ideal for your capsule wardrobe, Nisolo has you covered with their award-winning huaraches. The ethical fashion brand’s flats and mules are ethically handmade in Peru by skilled shoemakers. Nisolo also has recently joined ABLE in the Lowest Wage Challenge publishing its lowest wages to spark more transparency in the fashion industry.

I’ve been wearing Nisolo shoes for many years and can attest to their quality and durability.

Conscious Qualities: Fair Trade

Price: $138 – $180

6. ABLE

A true ethical fashion innovator, ABLE continually pushes for more transparent fashion production practices. One of the most recent initiatives from the brand is their Lowest Wage Challenge, where they’re publishing the lowest wages in their supply chain.

I visited the brand’s Nashville headquarters and jewelry workshop and it was pretty incredible getting a glimpse inside the brand’s day-to-day operations and vision for the future.

Conscious Qualities: Fair Trade

Price: $115 – $128

Best of Sustainability In Your Ear: Okhtapus Cofounder Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy Accelerates Ocean Solutions

The ocean provides half the oxygen we breathe, absorbs 30% of our carbon emissions, and helps control the planet’s climate. By 2030, it’s expected to support a $3.2 trillion Blue Economy. Yet 70% of proven ocean solutions, such as coastal resilience, coral restoration, and marine pollution cleanup, never move past the pilot stage. These projects often win awards and get media attention, but then stall because funding systems don’t connect working ideas with the cities, ports, and coastal areas that need them. Stewart Sarkozy-Banoczy, co-founder and ocean lead at Okhtapus, wants to change that. Okhtapus, named with the Persian word for the octopus, uses a model that links what Stewart calls “the three hearts” of successful projects: innovators with proven solutions, cities and ports ready to use them, and funders looking for solid projects.
Stewart Sarkozy-Benoczy, Cofounder and Ocean Lead at Okhtapus.org, is our guest on Sustainability In Your Ear.
The first Okhtapus Global Replicator will launch in 2026. It will bring groups of proven innovators to work on important projects in specific places, such as a single port city like Barcelona, where Okhtapus already has strong partnerships, or a group of Caribbean islands facing similar problems. The aim is to have enough successful projects that funders stop asking “where are the deals?” and start saying “we’ve got enough.” The platform focuses on late-stage startups and scale-ups, not early-stage ideas. Stewart calls these the “Goldilocks zone”—solutions that are proven enough to copy but still need funding and partners to grow. By combining several solutions for different locations, Okhtapus can offer investors portfolios that fit their needs and make a real difference in cities, ports, and island nations.
Stewart has spent 20 years working where climate resilience and policy meet. He was part of President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, led policy and investments at the Resilient Cities Network, and is now Managing Director of the World Ocean Council. “Ten years from now, if this is done fast enough,” Stewart said, “we should have pushed hard enough on the funders and the system to change it. What we don’t know is whether we’ll get to the solution status fast enough for some of these tipping points.”

The built environment, particularly office buildings other urban facilities, are responsible for 39% of the global energy-related emissions, according to the World Green Building Council. Our guest today is leading a key battle to reduce the impact of the built environment. Tune in for a wide-ranging conversation with Rob Bernard, Chief Sustainability Officer at CBRE Group Inc., which manages more than $145 billion of commercial buildings, providing logistics, retail, and corporate office services across more than than 100 countries.

Rob Bernard, Chief Sustainability Officer at the commercial real estate giant CBRE, is our guest on Sustainability In Your Ear.
