British particle physicist Brian Cox is one of those incredibly bright fellows who doesn’t mind being in the public eye, and making observations that transcend science itself.
What he says here about stupidity is interesting. I would only add that the problem here isn’t actually stupidity itself, but rather that recently we’ve come to accept and, in fact, glorify it.
Think back 20 years, and try to imagine a United States that elected, and then re-elected Donald Trump. You cannot do it; it’s inconceivable.
Re: the meme here, I wonder what the people living in the happiest nations on Earth would say.
From the 2026 World Happiness Ranking, here are the top 6:
- Finland (7.76)
- Iceland (7.54)
- Denmark (7.54)
- Costa Rica (7.44)
- Sweden (7.26)
- Norway (7.24)
Notice anything?
They are all social democracies. Their average citizens pay slightly higher taxes, but a) they receive free education and healthcare, and b) there is virtually no poverty.
Providing the conditions under which the poor can become affluent is, of course, a good thing. Quality education and free daycare is a good start.
But making rich people richer with tax breaks for billionaires has been a proven failure.

I’ve never seen a toilet this soiled by diarrhea. But thankfully, there are now products that use pressurized steam to clean messes like this more-or-less instantly.
Apparently, they’re selling like hotcakes, but only to people incapable of asking themselves, “Where does all this fecal matter actually go? Does it seem like a good idea to blast it all over the bathroom? And if the bathroom door’s not closed, all over the house?”
