As you’re planning out a nursery for your newborn or baby on the way, you might be thinking about how you can ensure cleaner indoor air in the room your baby will be spending a whole lot of time in. This guide will help you with one part of that plan: non-toxic dressers, many of which can be easily used as changing tables as well.
What is a Non-Toxic Dresser?
There is a lot to consider in non-toxic furniture, but for the sake of this guide, we’ll focus on only the elements relevant to wood furniture since most dressers are primarily constructed with wood.
You might be thinking: why would I need a wood product to be non-toxic? Isn’t wood a natural material?
This is true, but similar to how natural fabrics like cotton can still be dyed with toxic dyes and treated with chemicals like PFAS (forever chemicals), natural furniture materials can also be stained and finished with harmful substances. Plus, composite wood products are certainly not the same as their solid wood counterparts, which we’ll get into in a moment.
By the way, below I will refer to “VOCs”, which if you haven’t heard this term before, it stands for volatile organic compounds. You can read more about VOCs and the associated health risks from the EPA.
Non-Toxic Wood
Composite wood, like MDF, is often glued together with glues that contain formaldehyde. (Not exactly the kind of toxic, carcinogenic VOC you want your little ones exposed to.)
Given this, I typically recommend looking for solid wood furniture. That said most dressers (even if their constructed with majority solid wood) will often have drawers made of composite wood or use composite wood for other parts of the dresser that aren’t as visible.
With that in mind, I would recommend a dresser made with at least partial solid wood and certified non-toxic composite wood elsewhere. When this isn’t possible, look for an overall product certification like GREENGUARD Gold. More on that below!
Zero or Low VOC Finishes
Most wood furniture isn’t left raw, but is finished with a wax, oil, lacquer, varnish or other finish. Some of these finishes can contain high levels of VOCs.
Look for brands that use low-VOC or zero-VOC finishes. Some brands will even use natural finishes like linseed oil or beeswax.
GREENGUARD Gold Certified
This is the most common non-toxic furniture certification. While this certification does not ensure zero emissions, the GREENGUARD Certification program by UL is a third-party verification that tests for over 10,000 chemical emissions and VOCs to verify low chemical emissions.
Even if a company reports that they use zero-VOC or low-VOC finishes, a GREENGUARD Gold certification is still a smart extra level of protection to look for, since many VOCs can be difficult to measure.
Where to Find Non-Toxic Dressers for A Nursery
Now that we have a foundation for what we are qualifying as a “non-toxic dresser”, let’s dive into our recommendations for where to find these dressers.

This family-run eco-friendly children’s furniture company prioritizes intelligent design (like baby changing trays that fit Oeuf’s dressers), quality craftsmanship, and sustainability. The brand’s furniture — like their non-toxic dressers for nurseries and kids’ bedrooms — are made in an FSC-certified facility in Latvia. While Oeuf is a smaller brand, the retailer Urban Natural has a 4.7 store rating on Google.
2. Babyletto

Babyletto offers a more affordable non-toxic dresser options for nurseries. And, many of the dressers either include a removable changing tray or are compatible with the brand’s changing trays. That said, typically with a lower price point, you’ll see more engineered wood — in Babyletto’s case, in the drawer fronts and frame. Some reviewers have also expressed complaints on the quality, but many products still have an above 4.5/5 star-rating.
3. West Elm (GREENGUARD Gold Certified Collection)

Classic Sustainability In Your Ear: The Ocean River Institute’s Natural Lawn Challenge for Climate Action
Turn back the clock with this classic interview that will get you ready for Spring yard care planning. A lawn may be beautiful but it can take a heavy toll on the environment, accounting for between 30% and 60% of residential water use in the United States. Rob Moir, Ph.D., is president and executive director of the Ocean River Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. ORI works with residential lawn owners to heal damaged ecosystems by restoring coastal areas to lessen the destructive impacts of climate change. The benefits of a natural lawn reach far beyond reduced local water pollution, eliminating chemicals that can contribute to cancers, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and other cellular diseases. Natural lawns are also better for local pollinators and store much more carbon than heavily fertilized lawns. What Makes A Dresser Sustainable?
As with anything in sustainability, there are various approaches that can make something “sustainable”.
Secondhand
With over 12 million tons (or 24 billion pounds) of furniture getting wasted each year in the United States alone, it’s definitely a great idea to look used when possible!
Secondhand not only helps divert furniture from the landfill, but reduces the need to extract new materials, whether that’s metal, wood, cotton, or increasingly, petroleum for synthetic fabrics and plastic.
Here’s where to look for secondhand dressers:
- Garage sales and estate sales (check EstateSales.net!)
- Facebook Marketplace
- OfferUp
- AptDeco
Responsibly Sourced Wood
Most storage furniture, like dressers, are made from wood (or engineered wood). While wood is a natural material, deforestation is a significant driver of climate change.
So, look for domestic or certified sustainably-sourced wood when purchasing wooden furniture. The largest most common certification is FSC, which stands for Forest Stewardship Council.
Even better is if you can find furniture made from reclaimed wood! This is basically upcycled wood that is being repurposed. This reclaimed wood can come from old barns, ships, factories, warehouses, or even wine barrels.
Non-Toxic Finishes
Unfortunately, many wood finishes contain harmful petroleum- and chemical-based solvents which can emit VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. While the toxicity is most severe during application and does reduce with time, the chemicals can build up in your home, so you may feel most comfortable minimizing risk of VOCs.
Why does this matter? Well, the EPA reports that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air — largely due to what we bring into our homes, from furniture to household cleaners.
Look for low-VOC finishes, water-based finishes, or natural oil finishes like linseed oil.
Where to Find Sustainably Made Dressers

1. Urban Natural

7. Crate & Barrel FSC-Certified (Honorable Mention)
Price Range: $899 – $2,699
While Crate & Barrel does not have as many sustainability efforts as other large retailers like West Elm, the company has a vast selection of FSC-certified wood storage furniture, including dressers, chests, and full wardrobes or armoires.
You’ll find an array of woods and finishes as well, from weathered rustic natural wood to dark espresso-finished wood.
