What Voltaire wrote here seems completely true.

Moreover, “our times” are marked by existential threats: environmental collapse in general and climate change in particular, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the trend towards of world fascism, as the United States teeters on the edge of losing its democracy.

At this point, perhaps it’s a good thing that our focus is on solving the problems that loom so close and pose such horrific threats.

I know there are people hoping to see human civilization destroy itself, to welcome in the apocalypse as forecast in the book of Revelation. In fact, one of my co-coaches in the days our kids played soccer had this precise belief.

When I explained that my life’s work was to halt the destruction of human society, he chastised me: “Oh no Craig! The sooner life on Earth comes to an end, the sooner Christ will return to summon us all to Heaven!”

I wasn’t impressed with his thinking.
