Society’s great minds constantly caution us about the need for wisdom and decency to keep pace with the growth in our capacity to blow things up.
Some are optimistic that this can occur. Others, e.g., American musician, composer, and songwriter Tom Waits are less so. He says: ‘We Are Monkeys With Money and Guns.’
I get a call every week or so from someone working for a start-up in oil exploration, hoping that I’ll invest. I guess my name and cell number got collected somehow from various online searches I’ve made.
I’m always quick to explain, “Oh, sorry, I don’t support wrecking the planet, even if I can profit from it. Neither should you. Bye now.”
I wish this were true, but most of these people don’t have passports, and many of them can’t afford to bus ticket to a neighboring county in West Virginia, Alabama, etc.
