The meme here reminds me of a thought I had during my first (and only) course of the subject:

There’s no guarantee that the human mind evolved so as to make sense of the universe, and it appears that, in fact, it did not.  We’re used to dealing with things around us that we can see and touch, like spears, rocks, and bodies of water.  To say that two particles on opposite sides of the universe affect one another instantaneously is so completely counter-intuitive that trying to figure this stuff out might just be folly.

I just the man met who, working in a research lab in Finland, discovered the “extracellular matrix,” a collection of proteins and carbohydrates to which all healthy cells must bind in order to stay alive, which provides the body’s structure.

This has relevance to cancer research, because those cells do not have to adhere to the matrix, which is why they move around inside the body, and ultimately metastasize, landing somewhere and divide rapidly.

I asked him if he is religious, i.e., if thought God created the extracellular matrix.   He immediately replied no.

The other day, someone asked me, “If you had to answer this question in only one word, what gives your life meaning?”  I replied, “Helping.”

Now, unlike Richard Branson, I’m not a billionaire, so my capacity in this arena is limited.  Yet we all, most of us anyway, do what we can.

As Gandhi said, “Whatever you do in life will be insignificant, but it is very important that you do it.”
