A course called “The Problem of God” a requirement for all incoming freshmen at Georgetown University, or at least in was in the late 1970s when I was a grad student there.
Here’s part of the “problem,” at least for me: I wonder how it’s possible that God is so vain that He threatens eternal punishment for those who don’t believe that He exists. Sounds like strange behavior for an omniscient, omnipotent, and loving being.
It’s especially weird when taken in contrast to Socrates and the Buddha, neither of whom could have possibly cared less if people following them or not.
One can add a few things to the list here, e.g., the U.S. military, educational standards, the application of science in policymaking, and the quest to phase out fossil fuels.
It appears that Trump destroys everything he touches, with exception of his own wealth and power, and that his family and rich cronies.
Michael Fanone, the DC police officer who was severely beaten by the Jan. 6 insurrectionists, calls on all Americans to take a side, preferably the side of democracy, freedom, and rule of law.
It’s true that those in fear of being called “libtards” by hateful morons are under attack here in the most terrible days of the American republic. But you certainly wouldn’t rather be one of these idiots, would you?
Long after the MAGA Trump supporters and the neo-Nazis have faded away, this world will still honor and reward people who can think and make contributions to our society.
