Over the past few decades, billionaire Bill Gates has invested heavily into various technologies associated with climate change mitigation.
Here are his thoughts on reducing the emissions from the meat industry, presented in an article in which he points out, “If cattle were a country, it would rank number three in the world in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.”
He claims that, currently, plant-based meat is far lesser recognized than, say, renewable energy and electric transportation as a tool to decarbonize our civilization, and I’m sure he’s correct.
What we have on our side here, however, is that products from companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are virtually indistinguishable from burgers, sausage patties, etc. that come from slaughtered animals and the cruelty that factory farming represents.
Wind contributes about 12% of the U.S. grid mix, though it’s over 70% in some of the plains states.
As one reader pointed out, “It’s great for the common American. Sorry it doesn’t work for billionaires.”

We often talk about the “externalities” of fossil fuels, normally referring to things like lung disease, climate change, ocean acidification, and so forth. But we sometimes forget about people with their bodies blown to bits.
It’s incorrect to say that “liberals are furious” on this matter. We’re deeply disappointed that about one-third of our population is a blend of greedy pigs and hateful idiots.
I was on a Zoom call this morning with some people who were weighing in on this question: Is the damage caused by the Trump administration in terms of losing our claim to be a moral, democratic leader on this planet permanent, or can it be repaired over time?
We were unable to reach a consensus. Some said that the nation in the modern era is swinging as if on a pendulum. We had a gentleman and an extremely accomplished intellectual in the person of Obama, following by a despicable thug (Trump); the pendulum can swing back once more.
