Modern air conditioners can heat and cool, making them very versatile. Regular maintenance is not just a chore but a proactive step that can keep them in good condition all year, ensuring they function efficiently and last longer.
But when is the best time to clean your air conditioner in Australia? Let’s explore this question further.
What’s Involved in an Air Conditioner Cleaning Process?
Understanding what happens during an air conditioner service is crucial. It empowers you to make informed decisions about your unit’s maintenance and ensures you’re not caught off guard by any unexpected issues.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Inspection:
Cleaning Coils:
Checking Filters:
Refrigerant Levels:
Lubrication and Connections:
Moving parts will be lubricated, electrical connections tightened, and the thermostat tested to make sure it controls the temperature correctly.
In summary, an air conditioner service involves checking, cleaning, and maintaining the system to keep it running well, extend its life, and keep your home cool and comfortable.
Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Cleaning
Less Airflow:
If you put your hand in front of a working air conditioner, you should feel a strong flow of cold air. If the airflow has decreased, it could be due to a dirty air filter or blockages in the ductwork.
When you notice signs like decreased airflow, it’s crucial to act swiftly. These issues can make your unit work harder, potentially leading to more significant problems like compressor failure. Addressing this issue quickly prevents further damage and ensures your unit’s longevity.
Higher Energy Bills:
If your energy bills suddenly increase, your air conditioner might be working too hard. It can happen if the unit needs to be updated and more efficient.
Older units, especially those over 15 years old, have motors and capacitors that may start to fail, leading to higher energy consumption. It might be time for a replacement or a thorough repair.
Bad Smells:
A musty smell from your AC unit usually means mould or mildew is growing inside. It can spread quickly in damp areas, causing respiratory problems and asthma. Burnt-out wires can also cause a bad smell.
Degraded wire insulation can lead to short circuits and a burning smell, which is a severe fire hazard. In either case, servicing your air conditioner is essential.
Strange Noises:
Whirring, grinding, or rattling noises indicate your air conditioner is struggling. If you hear these sounds, turn off your unit immediately, as it could be a failing compressor.
The compressor is crucial for your air conditioner, so consult a professional if you suspect an issue; it may need replacement.
How Often Should You Clean the Air Conditioner?
Most experts agree that servicing your air conditioner once a year is enough. However, if your unit is in a dusty area or is an older model, it might need more frequent servicing.
It’s always a good idea to check your unit’s manufacturer manual for specific recommendations.
Consider the season you use your air conditioner the most. If you live in a hot climate and use it often in the summer, it’s best to serve it in spring. If you use it mainly for heating, autumn is the best time for a check-up.
You should also think about:
- How often do you use your air conditioner, whether daily or occasionally
- If you have pets or allergies
- The type of air conditioner you have, such as central, window, or portable
- The environment your air conditioner is in, like moist or dusty areas, which might need more frequent servicing
If you need more clarification, consult a professional. They can give you a maintenance schedule to help your unit last for years.
How to Clean Air Conditioner Filter in 2024
Cleaning your air conditioner filter is easy for a responsible homeowner or tenant. It’s an essential maintenance task that ensures efficient operation and air quality.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean your air conditioner filter in 2024 in Australia:
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Screwdriver (if required for access)
- Vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment
- Mild detergent or dish soap
- Water
- Soft cloth or towel
Steps:
Turn Off the Air Conditioner:
- Ensure the unit is switched off and unplugged to avoid any electrical hazards.
Access the Filter:
Open the front panel of the air conditioner. It may require a screwdriver if it’s secured with screws.
Remove the Filter:
- Carefully remove the filter from the unit. Note the orientation of the filter for proper reinstallation.
Vacuum the Filter:
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris from the filter. This step is usually sufficient for regular maintenance.
Wash the Filter (if necessary):
- You can wash the filter with mild detergent and water if it is dirty.
- Fill a basin with warm water and a small amount of mild detergent.
- Submerge the filter and gently agitate it to remove dirt.
- Rinse the filter thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.
Dry the Filter:
- Allow the filter to air dry completely before reinstalling it. Placing it in direct sunlight can help speed up the drying process but ensure it’s not exposed to excessive heat.
Reinstall the Filter:
- Once the filter is completely dry, place it back into the air conditioner in the same orientation as it was removed.
- Secure the front panel of the unit using the screwdriver if necessary.
Turn On the Air Conditioner:
- Plug the unit back in and turn it on. Ensure it’s operating correctly.
Air Conditioner Filter Maintenance Tips 2024:
Frequency: Clean the filter every 2–4 weeks during peak usage.
Replacement: Check the manufacturer’s recommendations for filter replacement intervals. Some filters are designed to be replaced rather than cleaned.
Professional Maintenance: Schedule regular professional maintenance for your air conditioner to ensure all components function efficiently.
Additional and Seasonal Considerations for AC Cleaning
Climate: Dust and pollen can accumulate quickly in Australia, especially in rural or bushfire-prone areas. More frequent cleaning might be necessary.
Allergy Season: During peak allergy seasons, cleaning the filter more often can help improve indoor air quality.
By following these steps, you can keep your air conditioner running efficiently and maintain good air quality in your home.
When is the Best Time to Clean Your Air Conditioner in Australia
The best time to clean your air conditioner in Australia depends on when you use it the most. If you primarily use your air conditioner for cooling during the hot summer months, cleaning and servicing it in spring is ideal.
It ensures it’s in top condition for its heavy summer use. On the other hand, if you use your air conditioner mainly for heating in the colder months, cleaning it in autumn is best.
This preparation helps keep your unit efficient and ready for the winter season. Regular cleaning and maintenance before peak usage periods ensure your air conditioner runs smoothly and efficiently, providing optimal comfort in your home.

Professional vs. DIY AC Cleaning
Professional AC Cleaning:
Hiring a professional to clean your air conditioner ensures the job is done thoroughly and correctly. Professionals have the expertise and tools to clean parts of the unit that might be difficult to reach or require special equipment.
They can also identify and fix any underlying issues that may not be obvious to the untrained eye, ensuring your unit runs efficiently and lasts longer.
Additionally, professional cleaning often includes a detailed inspection, which can prevent future problems and costly repairs. The main drawback is the cost, as professional services can be more expensive than doing it yourself.
DIY AC Cleaning:
Cleaning your air conditioner yourself can be more cost-effective and convenient. Basic tasks like cleaning or replacing the air filter, wiping down accessible parts, and ensuring the area around the outdoor unit is clear can quickly be done with minimal tools and effort.
DIY cleaning allows you to maintain your unit more frequently, which can help keep it running efficiently between professional services. However, with the proper knowledge and tools, you might avoid deeper issues or accidentally damage the unit.
Additionally, DIY cleaning usually involves less than the comprehensive inspection and maintenance that a professional would provide.
Professional cleaning provides thorough maintenance and peace of mind at a higher cost. In contrast, DIY cleaning is more budget-friendly and convenient but may require more depth and expertise from a professional service.
Regular DIY cleaning and periodic professional servicing are the best approaches for optimal performance and longevity of your air conditioner.
