What Gene Roddenberry says here is probably correct, but, sadly, our species seems to be headed in the opposite direction.  Differences in ideas and attitudes are perceived as alien, as thus, as threatening.

The most obvious real-world example, of course, is the war in the Middle East, but let’s not forget about the rise of white nationalism in the U.S. since the MAGA Trumpers came along about 10 years ago.
